This 19th century oil painting of the clipper ship “George E. Walcott” by noted maritime artist Solon Francis Montecello Badger (1873-1919) was severely damaged with many holes and cracks in the canvas.

Before photo of the 22” x 26” canvas. The varnish layer was yellowed and there was crackling on the lower right corner.

Before photo of the verso of the canvas. Water damage is evident along with a large hole and “band aid” tape on smaller holes.

In order to repair the holes and restore the painting, a new canvas backing was attached in order to provide a solid support.
