George Sanders Bickerstaff (1893-1954)

Known for his landscape paintings, George Sanders Bickerstaff was born in Marianna, Arkansas on April 12, 1893. Bickerstaff was a self-taught artist except for a brief period at the Art Institute of Chicago. He led a peripatetic existence before moving to California 1922 where his early years were spent in San Diego and in the Los Angeles area. He often exhibited with noted plein air painter Paul Lauritz. Bickerstaff was a prolific painter and his works captured the essence of California landscape, often including eucalypti as rolling hills of California wildflowers. He was adept at promoting his own work and achieved commercial success during his lifetime. He died in Ukiah, California in 1954.
